How long should a college essay be?
The Common Application personal statement is capped at 650 words. Supplemental essays usually run 100 to 400. The more useful question is not how long an essay may be, but how much of the allowance you should actually use.
How long should a college essay be?
The Common App personal statement has a hard limit of 650 words and a practical floor near 500. Supplemental essays typically allow 100 to 400 words and should be written to within about ten words of the limit. Short answers of 50 words or fewer are their own form.
| Essay type | Usual limit | Aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Common App personal statement | 650 words, hard cap | 600 to 650 |
| Long supplement ("Why us", "Why this major") | 250 to 400 words | Within 10 words of the cap |
| Short supplement | 100 to 200 words | Within 5 words of the cap |
| Short answer / activity description | 25 to 150 characters or words | All of it |
| Additional information (optional) | 650 words | As few as the situation needs |
The "additional information" box is the exception that proves the rule. It exists to explain circumstances, not to add a second essay, and using it without a reason is a small negative signal.
Is it bad if my college essay is under the word limit?
Slightly under is fine; noticeably under is a signal. A 480-word personal statement against a 650-word allowance suggests the story ran out rather than that you were disciplined. On a supplement, coming in at half the limit reads as indifference to that school.
There is a real difference between the two documents here. The personal statement has a natural length and a 610-word essay is not penalised. A 250-word supplement answered in 110 words is a different matter, because the reader is specifically testing how much you know about the school, and brevity there is usually the absence of material.
If your supplement is short, go back to research rather than to the thesaurus. Adding adjectives to reach a count makes the essay worse on every axis a reader grades.
What happens if you go over the word limit?
On the Common Application you cannot: the form will not accept a personal statement over 650 words, and supplement fields enforce their own caps. On school-specific portals that do not enforce a limit, going meaningfully over reads as an inability to follow a brief.
Treat an unenforced limit as enforced. Readers work through thousands of files, and the applicant who submitted 900 words against a 650-word request has made the reader's job worse before the first sentence.
How do you cut a college essay down to the word limit?
Cut explanation, not detail. Remove the sentences that tell the reader what to think, the adverbs, and any summarising conclusion. Concrete scenes and named specifics stay. Most drafts lose 15 percent with no loss of meaning on the first honest pass.
- Delete the last paragraph and check whether the essay still ends. It often ends better.
- Delete the first two sentences and check whether the essay still starts. Most drafts begin one paragraph before they should.
- Remove every adverb and put back only the ones you miss.
- Cut "I realized that", "I learned that", "It made me think about". The realization should be visible without the label.
- Keep every proper noun. Names and specifics are the part doing the work.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Common App essay word limit?
650 words, enforced by the application form. There is no official minimum, but essays under roughly 500 words rarely give a reader enough.
Do colleges count words or characters?
The Common Application counts words for the personal statement. Some school portals and some activity fields count characters instead, so read the field label rather than assuming.
Does the title count toward the word limit?
Personal statements do not need a title, and the Common App does not provide a title field. If a school portal does, the title is usually counted, so keep it short or skip it.
Should a supplemental essay use the full word count?
Yes. Write to within about ten words of the limit on a 250 to 400 word supplement. Unused space on a school-specific question reads as a lack of material.
