About Essay Clarity

Essay Clarity is an independent web application that scores college application essays against a real admissions rubric, ranks a student’s own drafts against each other, and researches the schools behind each supplement. It gives feedback on a student’s writing. It does not write it for them.

Why does Essay Clarity exist?

It was built because the feedback students get on application essays is either too vague to act on or too generous to trust. A parent watching a high-school senior work through a college list wanted something that would say which specific part of a draft was weak, and would not rewrite it.

That origin shapes every decision in the product. A student who gets “this is great, maybe tighten the middle” from three different adults has learned nothing. A student who learns their draft scores 8 on voice and 5 on structure knows exactly what to spend Tuesday night on. The whole tool is an attempt to turn an impression into something a seventeen-year-old can act on at 11pm three weeks before a deadline.

What does Essay Clarity actually do?

Four things: it builds a student profile before scoring anything, scores a draft on six named axes with line-level feedback, ranks several drafts against each other in one calibrated pass, and assembles a research brief for each school on the list across six categories.

  • Profile first. Six fields about who you are and what you have done, filled in before any essay is scored, so feedback is measured against you rather than a generic ideal applicant.
  • Rubric scoring. Your essay scored 1–10 on six axes, with written reasoning citing evidence from your own sentences, and adjustable strictness.
  • Draft ranking. Two or more drafts scored in one pass, calibrated against each other, because absolute scores taken a week apart are not comparable.
  • School and faculty research. A brief per school across six categories, including the professors you would actually work with, so a “Why Us” supplement can name real things.

What does Essay Clarity refuse to do?

It does not write essays, it does not rewrite a student’s sentences, and it does not predict or guarantee an admissions outcome. These are product decisions, not missing features, and they are the reason the tool can be used honestly in an application.

The no-rewriting stance is the one students push back on and the one worth keeping. Voice and authenticity is the first axis any admissions reader applies, and a draft smoothed into someone else’s prose, a supportive adult’s or a language model’s, loses on it. There is also the plain version: most colleges treat a generated essay as a misrepresentation of the applicant’s own work, and a tool that produces one is handing a student a problem.

We also do not claim to know what any admissions office will decide. The essay is one part of a file that also holds a transcript, course rigour, recommendations and context. What a rubric can tell you is whether this draft is doing its job.

Who is behind Essay Clarity?

Essay Clarity is built and run by a small independent team, not by a university, an admissions office or a test-prep company. It takes no money from any school and has no relationship with any admissions decision. Email reaches a person at support@essayclarity.com.

The writing on the Insights blog and in the guides comes from the same place. Where a guide states a fact about the application process rather than an opinion about writing, it cites the source, and those sources are listed at the foot of each guide.

Is Essay Clarity affiliated with any college?

No. Essay Clarity is independent and unaffiliated. It is not endorsed by or connected to the Common Application, any university, or any admissions office, and nothing it produces can influence an admissions decision. Where we describe what readers weigh, we are describing published practice, not inside access.

What happens to students who cannot pay?

Every account starts with 5 free credits and no card. Beyond that, ambassadors, usually teachers and counselors, earn credits as the students they refer use theirs and gift them to students who cannot afford access. Ambassadors earn credits, never cash.

Frequently asked questions

What is Essay Clarity?

Essay Clarity is a web application that scores a student's college application essays against a six-axis admissions rubric, ranks their own drafts against each other, and researches the schools behind each supplemental essay. It gives feedback on the student's writing rather than writing it for them.

Who is Essay Clarity for?

Students applying to college in the United States, and the parents, teachers and counselors supporting them. Ambassadors are typically counselors and teachers who refer students and gift earned credits to those who cannot afford access.

Does Essay Clarity write essays for students?

No, and that is a deliberate product decision rather than a limitation. It scores, explains and comments on the student's own sentences, and never produces replacement text. An essay in someone else's voice fails the first thing an admissions reader weighs.

Is Essay Clarity affiliated with any college or with the Common Application?

No. Essay Clarity is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Common Application, any university, or any admissions office, and it cannot influence an admissions decision.
